LACK OF INNOVATION IS CRIPPLING MARITIME RECOVERY

Implementing changes to bolster a more entrepreneurial culture will take time, but less than the decades already wasted on government efforts to boost innovation through the supply of purported inputs, writes Philip Cross.

Learn to Code The Challenges of Creating Mass Employment in Our Digital World

In January 2019 internet trolls took to Twitter to taunt recently fired journalists with some advice: “Learn to Code!” It was a shot at American “elites” who were deemed dismissive of blue-collar workers whose jobs are disappearing. Digitalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Mediterranean

Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) are the spine of Euro-Mediterranean economies. In the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) countries, they account for over 90-95% of all firms in absolute figures (OECD, 2018; IMF, 2019), of which the majority are micro-enterprises (e.g. in Tunisia, micro-enterprises represent 98% of all firms [World Bank, 2014]). Notwithstanding their contribution to private sector development, their role in job creation and upward mobility is much more limited.

An Entrepreneurial Canada? Understanding Canada’s Chronic Lack of Innovation and How We Can Fix It”

As the Canadian economy recovers from the devastation wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown, Canada’s ability to return to normal quickly depends upon our ability to lead as innovators. Yet we also face a significant hurdle to achieving a full recovery – namely, Canada’s persistent lagging when it comes to innovation.

In MLI’s new report, titled “An Entrepreneurial Canada? Understanding Canada’s Chronic Lack of Innovation and How We Can Fix It,” Munk Senior Fellow Philip Cross makes the case that Canada’s failure to foster innovation comes down to a failure to embrace “creative destruction” – that is, the process of economic transformation whereby the old systems and structures of the economy are destroyed as new systems are introduced.

Industrial policy in Germany

Although the manufacturing industry forms the principal economic basis for the country’s prosperity and employment, the industrial policy does not have a good reputation in Germany. This is because the term is usually used to mean selective state intervention in individual markets and sectors, or on behalf of individual companies, rather than the creation of a general regulatory framework in which industry can flourish.
