Trade and Development

Trade is indispensable to fostering greater levels of global economic development. As the OECD has written, “No country has lifted itself out of poverty without international trade.” This category consolidates GTIPA-member reports assessing the intersection of trade and economic development.

The Sustainable Recovery: The key energy innovation of development

The 2020 edition of the I-Com Report on energy innovation falls immediately after the most acute phase of an unexpected, if not unpredictable, pandemic. The usual search around energy innovation which, like every year, seeks to broaden and differentiate the spectrum investigative compared to the previous edition, focusing on some innovations that could being paradigmatic (e.g. urban micro mobility) is more difficult than in past. In addition to the usual analysis on research and development, also extended to mobility, inevitably more and more sustainable, we have tried to identify other areas of diffusion impact, such as the combination of energy and digitalization or sector coupling and the accumulation of energy. Alongside these themes, innovations in the way work is carried out and, lastly, an in-depth study of startups, in particular energy ones.

United States Prosperity Index 2020

The United States is one of the world’s economic powerhouses. It is open, with strong infrastructure and competitive markets in which individuals and businesses have easy access to finance, and its productive capacity is higher than almost all similar countries. In the main, its institutions are robust, its education system is one of the best in the world, and the majority of citizens feel connected to each other and engaged in society. However, the U.S. under-performs in areas such as safety and security, health, and living conditions. As a result, the country is ranked just 18th out of 167 countries in the Legatum Prosperity IndexTM, and has not advanced in the rankings for the last decade.

Beyond the Energy Techlash: The Real Climate Impacts of Information Technology

Alarmists claim the tech sector’s carbon footprint is mushrooming out of control. But they wildly misrepresent the facts. Not only is the ICT sector making significant progress in decarbonizing, but ICT is also a powerful technology that enables other sectors to become more energy efficient.

Measuring Poverty 2020 - A report of the Social Metrics Commission

The Social Metrics Commission’s 2020 report on poverty in the UK is being published amidst the most significant health, social and economic crisis of modern times. When Commissioners first gathered in 2016 to begin to develop a new measure of poverty, we could never have anticipated that our third annual report would be released at such a time. However, the need for robust and agreed poverty measures and the Commission’s work is arguably greater than ever.

Capitalism needs an ethical reboot

Economists have been cautioning about the rising inequality around the world for some time now. The rising concern over the uneven distribution of the fruits of capitalism forewarned of a future when capitalism would eventually need saving from itself. The Covid-19 pandemic is probably that moment. It has revealed the deep fissures running through what was presumed to be the most efficient system of allocating resources.

Value Addition, Jobs and Skills: A Study of India's Exports

Exports serve as an engine of economic growth and can potentially help countries come out of poverty and unemployment. However, as the production process is increasingly getting fragmented globally, greater exports no longer imply higher domestic production, as imports of intermediate products used as inputs in exports also increase. Global Value Chains (GVCs) have now become a defining feature of trade in goods and services globally. Economic Survey 2019-20 also highlighted the importance of GVCs in India’s exports, by devoting an entire chapter, suggesting ways to integrate Indian firms into GVCs.
