The Future of Health Technology in the European Union: State of Art and Future Scenarios

Health Technology Assessment is a multidisciplinary field of policy analysis that studies the medical, social, ethical, and economic implications of development, diffusion, and use of health technology. A major purpose of HTA is to inform policy decision located at different levels in order to shape both investment/disinvestment choices and/or coverage and reimbursement decisions. This report describes the state of the art in Europe and at comparing HTA methodologies, functions, governance, and role in policy making among representative EU countries. It also underlines the need to achieve a greater degree of harmonization, by tracking similarities and differences among Member States to highlight shortcomings and to hypothesize future developments.
