Outsourcing and Offshoring of R&D in Global Value Chains

Swedish companies locate almost half of their R&D activity in other countries. Despite this, there exists a lack of knowledge about how outsourcing works in practice and its long-term effect on companies’ development and competitiveness. Through a number of case studies of Swedish companies’ R&D establishments in India, this report describes the fragmentation of R&D processes, describes how they impact corporate learning, and provides lessons for innovation policy.
